"Processing is an open source programming language and environment for people who want to program images, animation, and interactions. It is used by students, artists, designers, researchers, and hobbyists for learning, prototyping, and production. It is created to teach fundamentals of computer programming within a visual context and to serve as a software sketchbook and professional production tool. Processing is an alternative to proprietary software tools in the same domain." - Processing.org
My name is Greg Eckler, I am a MFA student in the Graphic Design department at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). In the course of taking a Digital Studio II with Professor Zoran Belic, I chose to study the Processing programming language developed by Casey Reas and Ben Fry while they were part of the MIT full-time graduate studio.
What you find here is the result of my studies in Processing, which I did with the help of Casey and Ben's book, Processing, A Programming Handbook for Visual Designers. So have a look around and explore Processing (It's Awesome). As stated earlier Processing is an open-source language and you can find the source code for each sketch linked on the page of the sketch (found in the Sketches archive.
Oh and I hid easter eggs around the site :D some are key-commands and others just take a mouse-click to find. Enjoy!
Processing: A Programming Handbook
for Visual Designers and Artists
Casey Reas and Ben Fry
(Foreword by John Maeda).
Published 24 August 2007, MIT Press.
736 pages. Hardcover.
Through my "Adventures in Processing" I was capable of creating a "Virtual" version of my Creative Blocks.
Now you too can enjoy them on your own desktop with this downloadable app. for Mac or Windows. Enjoy!
Light Writer is an amazing piece of programming (at least for myself :P). You can download and draw in it and when done either press any key or just close the window and Light Writer will output a Quicktime Movie file of your drawing as an animation. Awesome!
Piet Mondrian tried to capture the hustle and bustle of New York City, as well as, a prospering America. The "Piet Project" seeks to take Mondrian's concept into an interactive environment. At any point during the movement of the piece just press the "S" key to save out a jpeg for your own use.
Of course it is available for Mac and Windows. Enjoy!
Viral Writer is much like Light Writer (see above), but in this case instead of outputting a movie, Viral Writer keeps going where you...left off shall we say. The lines separate and move independently of each other. Note there is a limit on how much you can write/draw, but let's face it, it is still Awesome! With this piece you can also press "S" at any point to output a jpeg for your own use.
Unfortunately at the release date I am still working on what I call "Splinter Cell: Junior" (HAHAHA). In this piece which also doubles as a sociological test, the "player" enters a scene as a sniper, in front of them are Saddam Hussein, Tony Blair, Mao Zedong, George W. Bush and Osama Bin Laden (or at least LEGO-like representations of them). The sniper gets 3 shots, but once that is exceeded the program tells them they died. Killed by security/bodyguards is unknown. The real test is to see who will they shoot. hmmm.
